NOTE: RAIN RAIN, DATE CHANGE! Earth Day ATX will now be held on Sunday, April 29th.
Earth Day Austin is the largest sustainability event in Central Texas. On April 29, 2018, thousands from the Austin Area and beyond will come to learn about conservation and sustainable solutions, celebrate our love for the environment, and get connected to the best and most innovative green businesses and organizations. We are proudly a 501C3!
With family and friends, attendees explore rich, in-depth programming, exciting new activities and engaging exhibitions that allow them to discover new connections to the environment and environmental issues. Inspired by their experiences and interactions, participants are empowered to make new sustainable choices that enhance their lives while helping the planet.
This is Reed's seventh year directing Earth Day in Austin and his seventh year as Co-Host of The Shades of Green Radio Show, celebrating 11 years of broadcast. Reed was co-founder of the Texas Green Network, the first green Chamber of Commerce in Texas and one of the first in the nation. He oversaw and represented TGN for 6 years, while over 3,000 participants collaborated. Growing up in Reed's "hippy media family" provided early exposure to environmental topics such as nuclear and solar power, the importance of transparency and very early exposure to microphones and cameras. Having worked with a long list of environmental leaders and organizations, the common denominator in his work is creating infrastructure and community that accelerates movement toward sustainable human development.
Janis Bookout has over 10 years of experience in small business development (with a focus on marketing, branding and systems), 5 years experience in elementary teaching, and 16 years of experience in personal and professional development. She entered environmental work in 2012 when she began consulting for Austin EcoNetwork (Austin's curator of all things environmental) and then became project coordinator of an EPA-funded city-wide project on food waste prevention and recovery. She also is co-founding a global citizen's climate initiative called 2020 or Bust.
Andrea graduated from The University of Texas at Austin where she studied Geography and Business. During her time at UT, she was involved in sustainability initiatives on campus and implemented a composting program in the student unions. Most recently, she was a Sustainability Coordinator for the UT Athletic Department, where she worked on zero waste programming for sporting events including Texas Baseball, which achieved a zero waste season (the first D1 baseball team in the nation to have done so!). Her hobbies include volunteering, encouraging others to reduce their environmental impact, and exploring local restaurants.
Shane has been community organizing since high school, when he joined the volunteer leadership team of the Austin Beyond Coal Campaign in 2012. He is a native Austinite who moved back home after graduating in December 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics from Stanford University. He also works as the Executive Assistant of Solar Austin, is a new Board Member for Indivisible Austin, and does volunteer policy advocacy with Austin Justice Coalition (AJC) and the Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ).
